As I have already mentioned in previous articles, the pelvic floor fulfils important tasks in our body. For example, it closes the pelvis downwards, supports the internal organs and thus supports our upright posture. The pelvic floor muscles also ensure that our body's sphincters function properly and that we do not empty our bladder and bowels uncontrollably. If that hasn't convinced you of the importance of the pelvic floor, then you can learn more interesting facts in this article.

4 facts about the pelvic floor

1. the pelvic floor and breathing are connected

The diaphragm and the pelvic floor are both part of the torso capsule. When you inhale, the diaphragm swings down to make room for the air. At the same time, the pelvic floor also descends. When you exhale, the diaphragm and the pelvic floor swing up again.

2. pelvic floor training is also useful during pregnancy

Many people believe that exercise of any kind should be avoided during pregnancy . But there are exercises for the pelvic floor muscles that can help to counteract negative symptoms, especially during pregnancy.

Pregnancy puts a lot of strain on the body. The pelvic floor muscles are also put under a lot of strain and involuntary urine leakage can occur. This can be counteracted by pelvic floor training. Training can also make childbirth easier, because a strong pelvic floor is more resilient and can withstand more than an untrained one.

There are special pelvic floor courses in which participants learn to perceive their pelvic floor correctly and to tense it specifically. They also receive tips for everyday life to prevent negative consequences such as incontinence and pain in the pelvic area.

3. a healthy pelvic floor promotes digestion

When the pelvic floor muscles cramp, the movement of the bowels may be inhibited. This in turn leads to constipation. To counteract this, the pelvic floor muscles should be exercised regularly.

4. men should also exercise their pelvic floor muscles regularly.

Many men are not even aware that they have a pelvic floor. Yet a weak pelvic floor can also be the trigger for incontinence and pain in men. For this reason, men should also regularly train and strengthen their pelvic floor muscles.
